V. River Restoration Design Implementation
No Course Scheduled for 2008

Fee: $1600 per person 5 Day Course

WILDAND HYDROLOGY  will offer a new course that includes a combination of lectures and field observations of on-going river restoration construction.  It will also involve field review of several past “Rosgen” projects throughout the state including restoration on bedrock, boulder, cobble, gravel and sand bed stream types.  The objective of the course is to familiarize both the designer and their contractor/operator with the key elements and construction details of proper restoration implementation methods.  The course will be taught by both Dale Hockett of Elk River Construction and Dave Rosgen of Wildland Hydrology.  Dale has worked with Dave since 1986 and has implemented a multiple variety of river restoration designs.

The course content involves:

  • Behavior fundamentals for contractors
  • The ten cardinal rules for a successful restoration
  • Updates on new procedures/design specifications and new structures
  • How to “insure” that the design is laid out and implemented correctly
  • Effective communication and quality assurance between the field supervisor/designer and the contractor
  • Field measurements needed concurrent with construction for timely verification of the proper design implementation
  • Specialized equipment for various field situations
  • Contracting/bidding – viewpoints from the contractors perspective
  • Sediment and “damage” control
  • Re-vegetation and transplanting/seeding methods
  • Recommended procedures for construction staging
  • What can go wrong . . . how to avoid problems in construction . .  lessons learned

 Who should attend:

This course is provided specifically for restoration designers who have completed all 4 courses and for their contractors/operators.  The course offers a much needed opportunity for designers together with their contractor/operators to bridge the gap between what is on paper and how to get it on the ground! This course is open to any student who has completed the design class, the contractor may attend only with the design course graduate unless he/she has taken all the prerequisite courses.  This course allows a good opportunity for open dialog on the how’s, why’s, when’s and why not’s  in river restoration construction.
