General Description: This course is designed to provide the basic stream surveying skills needed as a prerequisite for the Applied Fluvial Geomorphology course. Individuals will be trained on the use of basic surveying techniques to collect, analyze, and record physical stream data. A combination of lecture and field sessions will provide practical experience in the following subjects and activities:
- Survey Theory for Analyzing Rivers
- Set-up of a Field Notebook
- Representative Field Survey Drawings
- Level Line Surveys
- Line of Sight Level "Instrument" Setup
- Collection of Profile Data
- Collection of Cross-Section Data
- Field Graphing and Calculations
- Compare and Present Field Data
- Introduction to3-D Survey Techniques
This course will require all attendees to have a calculator and a straight edge ruler. All data will be recorded and analyzed by hand.
The class is open to a limited number of people to ensure that each student has the opportunity to learn the skills and perform all of the techniques needed for the survey of streams.
